A 48-year-old Montreal police officer was released on bail after appearing in
Quebec Court in Joliette yesterday morning on three charges of sexual assault
against minors.
The assaults are alleged to have occurred against two girls
age 11 and 13 between August and September of this year.
The Surete du Quebec arrested the man yesterday. He is scheduled to return
to court on Feb. 2.
The officer had a desk job in a police station, the department said.
Constable Anie Lemieux, a Montreal police spokesperson, said she did not know
which station. His rank was not divulged.
The assaults are alleged to have occurred while the officer was off duty.
The name of the accused cannot be published, to protect the identities of
the alleged victims.
The officer has been suspended from work without pay.
"Whenever a police officer is charged with a criminal offence, the
credibility of our organization is cast in an unfavourable light," Montreal
police chief Yvan Delorme said in a statement yesterday.
"Despite events such as these, the relationship of trust between residents
and police officers must be preserved."
